Register

The level of formality in language, ranging from casual and colloquial to formal and academic.

Register is the level of formality that a piece of writing adopts, determined by vocabulary, syntax, tone, and adherence to grammatical convention. Language operates on a spectrum from the highly informal (slang, contractions, sentence fragments) to the rigorously formal (Latinate vocabulary, complex subordination, impersonal constructions). A writer's choice of register signals the relationship between narrator and reader, establishes the world of the story, and shapes how the prose feels on the page.

Charles Dickens frequently shifts register for comic and dramatic effect, moving from the elevated language of narration to the colloquial speech of his lower-class characters. In True Grit, Charles Portis uses a consistently formal register for Mattie Ross's narration, a fourteen-year-old speaking with the precision of a frontier lawyer, which creates both humor and a sense of her fierce determination. Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao blends academic register with Dominican street slang, code-switching between registers to reflect the protagonist's divided cultural identity.

Choosing the right register is essential for establishing the voice of a narrator or character. A mismatch between register and context creates dissonance, which can be used deliberately for irony or humor but is damaging when unintentional. Pay particular attention to register consistency within a character's dialogue: a teenager who suddenly speaks in formal, complex sentences will feel inauthentic unless that formality is an established character trait. When revising, read each character's lines in isolation to ensure their register remains consistent and distinct from other characters.
