Yes. The free plan includes up to five projects with unlimited documents, flowcharts, idea boards, notes, tasks, comments, built-in spellcheck, and snapshots. You can write an entire novel without paying a cent. Plus ($5/month or $50/year) adds unlimited projects, drafts and branching, goals, statistics, Word Inspector, Smart Content, and more export formats. Pro ($12/month or $120/year) adds AI-powered tools like chat, manuscript analysis, text inspection, and BYOK (Bring Your Own Key).

What happens when I hit the 5-project limit?

You can keep using all your existing projects — nothing gets locked or deleted. To create a sixth project, you'll need to upgrade to Plus or archive an existing project.

It includes everything in Plus, plus AI-powered tools: a hosted AI chat assistant with credits for brainstorming and ideation, AI text inspection for analyzing any selection, AI manuscript analysis with 10 categories (including lore consistency across characters, settings, and timeline), and the option to buy additional AI credit packages anytime.

How does billing work?

Both Plus and Pro are available monthly or annually. Plus is $5/month or $50/year, and Pro is $12/month or $120/year — annual plans save you 17%. You can upgrade from your account settings. Payment is handled securely through Stripe — we never see your card details.

What is BYOK (Bring Your Own Key)?

BYOK lets Pro users connect their own AI API keys from Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google. Instead of using Plotiar's hosted AI credits, you use your own API account directly. This gives you unlimited AI usage at your own API rates — great for power users who want full control over their AI costs.

Can I buy more AI credits?

Yes — Pro plan users can purchase additional AI credit packages anytime from Account Settings. Three packages are available: Boost (500 credits for $3), Power (1,500 credits for $8), and Ultra (4,000 credits for $18). Credits are added to your balance instantly and never expire.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes — cancel from your account settings whenever you want. Your projects stay accessible on the free plan (limited to five projects). No lock-in, no penalties.

Do I lose my work if I downgrade?

Accepted Answer

No. All your projects and content remain intact. You'll keep read and write access to everything. The only change is that tier-specific features (like goals, statistics, PDF/EPUB export for Plus, and AI tools for Pro) become unavailable until you upgrade again.

What export formats are included in each plan?

Free plan includes TXT and DOCX. Plus adds PDF and EPUB, so you can produce print-ready manuscripts and ebook files directly.

Which tiers can use AI features?

AI tools (AI Chat, AI Text Inspection, AI Manuscript Analysis, AI Studio, and AI Smart Content variants) are Pro-only. Free and Plus tiers have no hosted AI access. Pro includes a weekly AI usage cap of ~250 credits (~$2.50), which resets every Sunday at UTC midnight. If you need more, you can buy additional credit packages or use BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) to bill against your own Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google API account.

What's the difference between real-time editing and inviting collaborators?

Real-time editing displays live cursors and presence for everyone in a shared project, and is available on all tiers (including Free). Actually inviting collaborators to your projects requires Plus. So a Free user can join a Plus user's project and see live cursors, but cannot send invites of their own.
